Overton appeared in a variety of films throughout the 1950s and 1960s, including “Fail Safe,” “The Tender Trap,” and “Wild River.” In 1963, he portrayed Tom Robinson in the film adaptation of “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
Overton also appeared in numerous television shows throughout his career, including “Gunsmoke,” “The Twilight Zone,” and “The Big Valley.” He is perhaps best known for his recurring role as Sheriff Fred Matson on “12 O’Clock High,” which earned him an Emmy nomination.
In addition to his work as an actor, Overton was an accomplished pilot who flew his own plane to many of his film and television locations. He also served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II.
Sadly, Overton’s career was cut short when he died unexpectedly at the age of 49 in 1967. He was survived by his wife and two children.
